Cette oeuvre a été écrite alors que le compositeur était encore étudiant à la Faculté de Musique de l'université Laval. C'est avec Esquisse et quelques autres oeuvres maintenant retirées qu'il remporta le Prix d'Europe en 1965.

...The evening had something else special ­ presence of Alain Gagnon, composer of Esquisse which the orchestra played to enthusiastic applause...
Signifiant in the composition is a density of ensemble through which the voices of individual instruments are heard. They are clearly important in their individual way and the effect is a complete hanging-together of music. The individual voices seemed necessary to express what the composer wanted to say, rather that being any exploration of sound for its own sake.
